DIY Pencil Holder: What To Do With Cookie Boxes

I don't know what it is, but I have a compulsion to hoard empty cookie boxes. Maybe it's because they only come around once a year. Maybe it's because there are different ones from year to year. Maybe it's just because they're so much fun. Whatever the source of the habit is...I have enough boxes to last me 'til next year.

First we made some bookmarks to donate to our school library. They were a huge hit with the kids! These pencil holders, though, I dreamt up with the leaders in mind. I made a few of these to give as gifts for Girl Scout Leader's Day and tossed in some GS pens and pencils from our local Girl Scout store (but you can find some online too). These were also a hit!

This really came to be when I was washing out the cutest little tin can (funny how things turn cute when you peel off their wrappers). I figured that since I was going to toss it into the recycling bin anyway, it wouldn't hurt to experiment. Break out the scissors, a little Mod Podge and some rubber bands - that's how easy this is.

Step 1: Deconstruct the box along the seams (go with the larger sizes, the Thank You Berry Munch boxes will be too small to wrap around).

Step 2: Measure your can's circumference and height and mark off the dimension on your box.

Step 3: Cut your box according to the measured dimensions. You will need to allow about 1/4 inch extra for the circumference - you can always trim any excess after it's wrapped.

Step 4: Paint on a healthy layer of Mod Podge around the outside of your entire can.

Step 5: Wrap the trimmed box around your can tightly. Secure with several rubber bands. Allow to dry overnight.

Once the glue is dried completely, a leader can trim any hang-overs with a straight razor or craft knife.

And that's all there is to it!

Any fellow box hoarders out there?! What are you doing with your empties?
