DIY Matching Game: What To Do With Cookie Boxes

It seems like we're at that time of the year again when we're all pushing aside those stacks of empty cookie boxes (tell me I'm not alone here!). You can take a peak at a couple of our ideas from last year here and here. This year I decided to do something a little more interactive for the girls, so I came up with a matching game.

This would be a great project for your Juniors or Cadettes to do with the Daisies or Brownies because of the cutting. Of course the shapes don't have to be perfect circles, but it helps to keep them uniform.

The supplies I used:

  • a 2 5/8" round cookie cutter - this fits around the cookie shapes on the boxes perfectly. You could go slightly larger, but I wouldn't suggest going with a smaller size. If you don't have a round cookie cutter to use as a guide, print out a circle shape and use a sturdy cardstock or cardboard as your master template.
  • a pen (for tracing)
  • scissors
  • 2 each of 6 (or more) different cookie boxes. If you don't have 6 different cookie varieties, go ahead an use doubles, just makes sure there are 2 for each set.
Step 1: Open up your boxes so they lay flat.

Step 2: Trace around your cookie cutter or template over the cookie shape and the logo image on the boxes. I prepped these all in advance and used the game as an ice-breaker during our welcome back meeting, but if you're going to do this as a meeting activity, it may be best to have a few circle templates prepared so all of the girls can trace their own circles.

Step 3: After all of your circles have been traced, cut them out. This is where you can either have your older girls help out, or let go of perfectionism and just let your younger girls do it themselves!

I chose to leave the backs of the circles plain so it would be more challenging for my Brownies. You could cover the backs in patterned paper if you prefer something more colorful.

And there you go, a fun and simple activity for you and your girls! It's great to keep these on hand in your meeting bin to fill time when you have those meetings that you blow through much faster than you expected!

How are you using up your empty cookie boxes?
