Brownie Snack Badge

The snack badge is one that I remember completing when I was a Brownie (although I'm sure it had a different name). Girls at this age love to cook and experiment with food. Of course there are so many ways to accomplish the 5 steps of earning this badge, but this is what worked well for us (in no particular order).
Jump into the world of snacks: We combined this step with step 2 when we decided to make a trail-mix. Our Junior group was hosting a camp training meeting and the Brownies were asked to supply snack. Each girl randomly selected a card, which each contained an ingredient that we selected for our mix. They had to take the card home and research how it was healthy for both us and the environment. Everyone presented their findings at the next meeting.

A snack for energy: I bought a bunch if different {mostly} healthy snack treats and had my group taste test all of them. I set out little plates for them to take at least one of everything (and I was so surprised every single girl tasted each item). Then they each chose their top 5 favorites and marked them on a tally card I made up. The options I set out were sunflower seeds, plain raisins, yogurt raisins, pistachios, marshmallows, dried dates, banana chips, and chex cereal. There was also a space on the bottom for 'other' suggestions. Finally, I tallied every one's selections and the top 5 ingredients of the group were included in the mix.

A blended snack: One of my co-leaders brought in her double blender and we separated our girls into 2 groups. This was easy for us because we only have 9 Brownies; larger troops may have to make more sub-groups. The girls measured and blended two different smoothie flavors. One was a tropical blend (mango, pineapple, peaches, etc) and the other was a berry blend. We used semi-thawed frozen fruit, 2% milk and a vanilla yogurt. The girls had a blast running the controls!

A savory snack: We made guacamole. Each girl got 1/2 of an avocado (pre-scooped out of the shell and onto a small sturdy paper plate). They fork-mashed them with a seasoning blend (garlic powder, onion powder, salt & pepper) and had optional additions if they wanted to experiment, including lime and salsa. I was also very surprised here that even the pickiest eaters in the group at least tried their guacamole.

A sweet snack: It really doesn't get easier than chocolate covered pretzels! This doubled as a Valentine's Day treat, but you can customize it to any holiday or season. We used white chocolate and fun sprinkles and the girls went to town!

Have you done the snack badge with your girls? What are some recipes that worked for you?
