Make Bookmarks: What to Do With Cookie Boxes

Ok so we've all been through months of eating cookies for breakfast and snacks (and maybe lunch once or twice if we're being honest). I have a confession: I tend to hoard cookie boxes. Don't get me wrong, a good deal of the boxes go to recycling - but I always think, 'ooo I could make ___ with these', or 'we could use these for ___'. It's a problem, I know - but I'm a sucker for recycling and reusing.

One thing I like to do with my Girl Scouts every year is make bookmarks.

Last year we made special bookmarks out of our empty cookie boxes for Volunteer Appreciation Day. I cut the boxes into strips (my Daisies had trouble manipulating the scissors with the cardboard) and punched a hole in the top of each piece. I put out adorable foam stickers, thin ribbons, and phrases for the girls to write on the plain side of the box strip. This year I happened to notice that our school library was in desperate need of bookmarks for the students, so that was our mission.

With the Brownies, we're able to take the bookmarks to a slightly more advanced level, so I broke out the Duck Tape. I have way more Duck Tape than any non-taper needs really, but I do love the variety that's available for all of my unnecessary craft experiments! First we're going to deconstruct the boxes; cut out along all of the creases.

Discard the small flaps and the nutrition label (no one wants that reminder!). Cut the large panels in half, making each bookmark strip approximately 6.5" by 2", which happens to be the perfect dimensions for the tape.

Cut strips of the patterned Duck Tape to slightly longer than 6.5 inches and lay the cardboard, plain side down, evenly along the edge of the tape. Press out any creases or bubbles.

Trim off the overhangs to make everything square. This is a little tricky, but I have found that small snips with just the front of the scissor blades (rather than going for long cuts) makes the job easier. Alternately, a leader could use a craft blade or straight razor to trim the excess.

You could also punch a hole at the top and add some ribbon for an extra cute touch, but we left ours as-is.

Tell me, how do you use your extra boxes?

Still have extra cookies lying around? Try these recipes - they're sure to be a huge hit!
